"Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me"--I admit it. I scoffed at Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl even before watching it because the notion of basing a movie on a theme park ride, a Disney one at that, was just too ridiculous. Well, shiver me timbers and call me Davy, not did Pirates turn out to be a wonderfully fun flick, it's probably one of the best I've seen in a long while thanks much in part to the juicy Johnny Depp and jolly ol' Geoffrey Rush. Now I'm raring to go and be the first in line for Disney's next theme-ride movie, The Haunted Mansion.

Did a little bit of spring cleaning (even though it's almost autumn) over the week, and I:

pointed all Chooseyourchange.com links to the site's new address, CYOC.net, and
re-linked most of the password-protected ASSGM.com stories in my archive and favorite stories to either Google Groups or YahooGroup's ASSGM-List

But I still have miles to go before I sleep... or is it no rest for the wicked? In any case, I've been working on something that will hopefully make maintaining this site a little bit easier. Stay tuned.

Sinfully Bad?--More of annoyingly mediocre. Considering the star power (Oh, Brad!) and impressive character designs and visuals (gotta love those creatures of myth), Sinbad could have and should have turned out to be so much better. The source material, IMO, deserved a treatment more epic in scope (something Disney's Nadia... whoops, I meant Atlantis also failed to do), but noooo... they had to make it all hokeyly human.

Stories I'm reading: Some long overdue hypnotherapy

Two Tombs Up!--Now that's what I call a sequel. Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life is so much better than its forgettable predecessor. (I don't even remember what that was all about.) It actually has a coherent and sensible plot (a good progression till the very end), great location shots (gotta love those frequent flyer miles), no gratuitous fight scenes (Charlie's Angels can go to hell), a ruthless and resourceful villain (a welcome change), and a very tangible sexual tension between Croft and Sheridan (Yum-my.) All in all, a highly enjoyable movie that hits what it's aiming for: Jolie good fun summer viewing. Salon.com

Gerard Butler--Amazing what a haircut and some hours in the gym can do. (Check out these before and after shots!) This great-lookin' Scot shows he has what it takes to become a serious actor. (Who else do you know contracted hypothermia during the first day of shooting his first film?) And if things go his way, we may very well be looking at the next James Bond.

Hulk Smash!--The overall feel of the film harkens back to the scifi/monster pics of a bygone era. Ang Lee paced the story in a such way that there were big deliberate build-ups to whenever the Hulk was unleashed. (Corollary: lots of slow parts used for character development.) Danny Elfman's musical composition certainly enhanced the atmosphere with his twingy notes of dread. I don't know if Mr. Lee was the first director who's done this, but I liked the way he incorporated comic book elements (e.g. multiple panels) to split the action onscreen and keep the audiences grounded to source of the movie material.

CGI has certainly gone a long way, and at least for me, I found the CG Hulk to be very well made, especially his face that has more emotions programmed in than Keanu Reeve's. The muscle transformations, I'm a bit sorry to say, weren't as homoerotic as I would have liked them to be. Much too fast to enjoy; guess I'll have to wait for the DVD to slow things down. I think it couldn't have hurt for Eric Bana to show off his naked bod a bit more.

Ironically, Hulk has more "brains" than "brawn". Not only do we get a scientific basis on why he turns green, but also a psychoanalytical examination of his personality. That's not to say there weren't a lot of juicy scenes with the Hulk showing off his devastating strength, but I appreciated that the movie was as much about the Man as it was about the Monster.

Rather than waste my time ruminating over the past, I decided not to let this opportunity of relaunching the site on its first-year anniversary. I only wish I had something more to offer today, but I'm just glad to be posting again. (Are you?) Other regular features like Stories I'm Reading and my reviews will resume shortly.

Before we get to the updates, I would like to thank a bunch of people who've helped me out with this site one way or the other. For starters, thanks to Alan, Aphex, Chad, Changes, metabods, Simon, and Tom for hosting some of my older stories on and, more importantly, maintaining their respective sites.

A big thanks goes out to my contributors--chester (and, in absentia, magister), copsucker_99, fucil99, sunfiregod, WolfPek, and zulator-- for all their wonderful works, and I hope that you guys know how much we, your loyal readers, love your stuff. Keep 'em cumming!
